Although sticking to a regular meal schedule is healthy, it is also good to sometimes mix it up and skip a meal or two. In nature, this would happen often as people would take longer to collect food or return from a hunt empty-handed.
Fasting has direct health effects. Whenever you fast for 12 hours or more, your body enters the first stages of ketosis. During your fast, your body will burn fat reserves and replace damaged proteins. This has a rejuvenating effect.
However, there are situations where we advise against fasting. Keep eating your normal three meals a day if one of the following applies to you:
- When you are (trying to get) pregnant or are breastfeeding.
- Just before and during your period.
- If you suffer from migraines.
- If you have a medical condition or are on medication that could be affected if you go without food (diabetes, heart conditions).
